Haley's Comet is an approximately 5 to 6
year old BLM Mustang mare that was seized from the Lexington County area
in late August, 2002. Haley was found with a small gray Arab mare
(Little Pearl to her SCARE family) in a small barbed wire enclosure with
no food or water. Both of the mares were quite emaciated and dehydrated.
The complaint had been called in to SCARE as an abandonment issue, so
after posting a Notice of Investigation, and notifying Judge Shockley,
presiding magistrate of the case, Lexington County Rep., Jan Carter,
returned the following day with the assistance of Lexington County
Deputies and several other SCARE members, to find the notice
undisturbed, and the horses exactly as they had been left the day
before. After reporting this information to Judge Shockley, he promptly
issued the warrant to seize the horses, and they were taken into SCARE's
custody where they received immediate vet care and their rehabilitation
process began.
Thanks to the perseverance of the Lexington County Sheriff's Dept, the
owners of the horses and property were located and summoned to court. In
light of the medical and financial difficulties reported to the Judge,
the owner was offered the opportunity to relinquish ownership of the
horses immediately in lieu of the prosecution of cruelty and neglect
charges, and they chose to do so.
Both horses were kept in the Lexington County quarantine facility where
they regained their body condition, as well as their zest for life. In
late October, Haley was placed with SCARE members Brenda Butler and
fiancée, Billy Lamm. According to Brenda, Haley (known to Billy as
"Jazzmine") is Billy's horse, even though Billy is a first-time horse
owner, with very little prior experience. Never under estimate the power
of that chemistry! Don't they make a beautiful couple! You think Brenda
might be a tad jealous? |
