Emaciated horse proving resilient

Community Times - Walterboro SC

SCARE volunteers rehabilitate deprived horses
In her prime, DEE DEE had a prized career as an award-winning race horse. As a horse orally challenged coupled with an unintended under-educated owner, Dee Dee became emaciated with a tear-jerking and anger-provoking frailty that cause her bones to push through the tender flesh wrapping her now skimpy bruised yet graceful existence.

Volunteer Spotlight: S.C.A.R.E

Lexington (WLTX) -- One midlands non-profit organization needs your help to continue their work rescuing abused and neglected horses. South Carolina Awareness and Rescue for Equines, Inc., also known as S.C.A.R.E. has two fundraising events coming up. The first is a car wash fundraiser in Gaston on Saturday, September 5. A hunter pace and trail ride is planned for Saturday, October 3 in Ravenel.
S.C.A.R.E. has rescued and provided respite for more than 500 horses. The organization is currently struggling to provide care to more than 30 horses throughout the state. Over the past nine years the organization has been dedicated to the education of horse owners, as well as the rehabilitation and care of horses from abuse and neglect cases.

The current state of our economy has placed a major hardship on many people who have horses, so they look to S.C.A.R.E. and the organization has been overwhelmed by the number of unwanted horses. The facilities are operating at maximum capacity, and SCARE is in jeopardy of losing one primary facility if they do not receive additional funds.

Besides donations, some immediate needs include feed, hay, shavings for stalls, tires for our horse trailer, building material for additional shelters, dewormers and winter blankets. There are several horses available for foster care and some available for adoption, although many horses are special needs.

SCARE is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, and currently has no paid staff positions, so volunteers willing to help are always needed. For more information visit their website at www.scequinerescue.org or call 803-422-6585.
