Miss Lilly

Miss Lily is an approximately 20-year-old, bay roan, TN Walker mare who was found in what appeared to be an abandoned barn in August, 2002, in Lexington County. When we found Miss Lily, she was on the verge of founder and colic, and had sustained liver damage from the moldy feed that she had been given. With the assistance of Lexington County Sheriff's Dept., the owner was located and given twenty-four hours to dispose of the moldy feed and get the mare veterinary assistance. Upon our return the following day, he had failed to comply with these recommendations. We found the mare rolling in her stall, without feed, water or hay. SCARE immediately seized the mare after attaining the necessary warrant from Judge Rawl, presiding magistrate.
In the final analysis, we discovered that Miss Lily's owner, was a gentleman with good intentions. It seems that he actually purchased the mare in her debilitated state with thoughts of rehabilitating her for his grandchildren. His family felt that this would be a good project for him to fill the long days of retirement. Unfortunately, this gentleman was in the early stages of dementia, and was incapable of taking of her. After realizing that the mare's health was in jeopardy, the family relinquished ownership to SCARE.
After weeks of cold-water footbaths, and a managed diet, Miss Lily's health finally began to show signs of promise. She continued her rehab with Jan Carter until January, 2003. She was then placed in permanent foster with Donna Holman and family, with two other SCARE buddies, Goliath and Gracie. Miss Lily now enjoys leisurely trail rides with Donna and her boys, and is the picture of health.
